Product Description The improved and enhanced analysis mode of PocketFritz 3 delivers full information on the search, like depth, evaluation and main line. But it can also display multiple lines (best, next best, etc.) and annotate your games. You can also install other chess engines, apart from Hiarcs and Crafty, which are part of the PocketFritz 3 package. With it you get a tournament tested openings book, over 300 annotated games in PGN format, and search functions for players, tournaments, ECO openings codes and the current board position. The design, operation and general usability of PocketFritz 3 is superb after all we are dealing with the younger brother of the worlds fi nest chess program Fritz. Beautiful piece sets, multiple screen layouts, optimised for different functions, easy entry of moves and comments, display of opening names, help from the built-in chess coach, display of threats, an integrated training system for openings, tactics and endgames this is what you get with the new program. And some icing on the cake: twelve hours of chess training in the Chess Media Format with audio commentary by GM Daniel King an IM Andrew Martin. PoketFritz3 guarantees fun and enjoyment, genuine chess training and professional online access, anywhere and anytime. SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS: PocketFritz 3 runs on Pocket PCs with Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC, Microsoft Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition, Microsoft Windows Mobile 5.0, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.0, Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1. For the installation of the program you will need a Windows computer with a DVD drive.

Exceeds expectations November 3, 2008 Harvey Reed (MA, United States) Short and sweet -- I purchased the Pocket Fritz as an alternative to reading chess books on the shuttle (Boston - DC). Mostly I expected to use it for chess tactics/playing practice (which I do). Now I am using it as a post-mortem partner after OTB games. When we review games, and look at a bunch of what-if variations, I can quickly capture them on the spot, and even see what Fritz thinks. When I get home, then I can move the games to the regular Fritz for heavy duty action :-)
Great pocketpc chess software September 25, 2008 P. Thompson 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This program is generally superior to other ppc chess programs I've tried, like Pocketgrandmaster, Convekta's PocketChampion, and the techno scidppc. There are so many good things about this program that I hate to point out its negatives. But here are a couple of them: 1) There is no way to resign a game to your computer opponent or offer a draw!! [I've forwarded this info to ChessBase support and they've passed it along to the programmer, but don't hold your breath.] 2) If you're not a good club player (over 1600), you'll have a hard time beating even the lowest setting for the playing program. If you can live with those 2 things, here are some great features to enjoy. On a purely aesthetic level, the board and pieces have a very nice look and are high-definition, with the board having the realistic grain as in full-blown Fritz. In full-size mode, the board takes full advantage of screen space and is very easy to see / look at (while still providing the most important controls at the bottom). Beyond aesthetics, there are some powerful features: complete control over database creation, editing, and searching. You can open pgn databases, but not sure why you can't open ChessBase's own cbh extension databases. Duh. On that note, Pocket Fritz also allows you to open Chess Media files, and even gives you 3 of their Fritz Trainer offerings IN FULL. That is AWESOME... BUT they are not in the normal Fritz Trainer format, instead requiring files with a cbhtm extension (and where do you find that format?! It's not even on their website!). I guess they'll be coming out with Pocket Fritz versions of their Fritz Trainer DVDs. Amazingly, you can access the ChessBase website's online database with nearly 4,000,000 games, many annotated, and review them right on the phone. With filtering features, you could, e.g., pull up all of Capablanca's games where he played black against Alekhine, for example. And then you can save those games directly into a database of your own creation right on your phone. There is also a fully detailed online opening book. You can also set up positions, and engage in basic opening training, tactics training, and endgame training. The playing program also has all of the following features familiar to Fritz users: "Give Hint," "Show Threat," "Threatened Squares," "Coach is Watching." You can organize the screen such that it is just a big board, or just notation, or a small board along with engine analysis and notation. Finally, one of the best features is the ability to easily annotate a game. Unfortunately, there is no way to have Pocket Fritz do an automatic analysis of an entire game while you're off somewhere else, as Fritz allows. But you can play through the moves while the engine is analyzing, and you can enter that analysis in annotations (including sub and sub-sub annotations). You can delete lines, promote lines, and comment on any move with ALL of the standard chess shorthand, as well as insert your own comments. That is, you can create a thoroughly commented game and save it in your own database. All in all, this is very powerful stuff. Now, if only it would let me resign a game that I'm being soundly beaten in.
