Product Description
Welcome to a world that knows no mercy - none is received, and none is given. Only physical and mental agility can keep you alive, though they are by no means a guarantor of life. You play the role of Geralt - an already legendary monster-slayer, but this is not a gift and is certainly not given lightly. ?The Witcher? is an immense computer game. Within its realm, you will have to assume the burden of choice. And this burden of choice, as light as it may appear, is the very thing that will both permit you to wield influence over the fate of the world, as well as get you slain prematurely.

Determine how Geralt's character develops and if he is to become a swordsman, an arcane battle mage, an alchemist in skirmishes, or any combination of the three 250 skills and abilities ?What you see is what you get? system - in choosing a character skill, you either have it or you don't Character development is linked with storyline progression. Geralt comes to remember his forgotten past, and therefore his supernatural skills and abilities Numerous real-time combat strikes, hits, thrusts, slashes, and cuts plus the appropriate use of magic, potions and styles of swordplay The control system is for both experienced users and beginners. Use a combination of the mouse and keyboard, or just the mouse

1 out of 5 stars not for your average computer   December 1, 2008

This game was too much for my three year old HP multimedia computer. Too bad I had to endure the lenghty installation process only to find out it wouldn't run on my machine. I gave the game to my son-in-law who has a newer computer.

3 out of 5 stars Fun but crash prone.   November 28, 2008

I picked up the enhanced version of the Witcher simply because any start up that goes back to redo and improve their first effort deserves some of my dollars. I wasn't expecting much but was impressed with what they managed to do with the second rate NWN2 engine.

The voice acting in the game is excellent as is the writing and depth of the characters. A serious lack of censorship in a game during romantic scenes is welcome and refreshing. The story is great and pretty original for a saving the world bit.

However, the game is not stable at all. It's like a drunken epileptic fat man on a unicycle trying to ride across a tight rope during a laser light show. Even with the latest updates and performance tweaks this game crashes frequently on Vista and XP. It especially likes to crash during a save, which wipes out the save and you lose that progress. So quick save becomes you friend and you constantly spam it to preserve progress for the inevitable crash.

As enjoyable as the game is, the lack of stability makes the frustration level too high to get any replay value out of it. You'll beat it just to beat it and move on to something else.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Games Ever!!   November 28, 2008

Absolutely one of the best games I have ever played!! If you are into great storylines, fall in love with characters and love finding treasure and things like that you will love the Witcher. I get engrossed in the stories in RPG and am not into the technical aspects and the Witcher, by far, has the best storyline I've come across. It is heartbreaking at times, but enlivened by some of the funniest dialog I have ever heard, especially by the minor townspeople walking around. The scenery is awesome and the music is phenomenal. Bought the enhanced edition just so I could get the music. Geralt has the sexiest voice I have ever heard. I played it 4 times in a row, then went on to Assassin's Creed, (which sucked in my opinion) and am now going back to the Witcher again. It spoils you for other games, I swear. I loved Oblivion & Neverwinter Nights 2 series but the Witcher tops them all for storyline and realism in dialog - it's rated mature for a good reason. The fighting is fantastic and Geralt's moves are almost 'ballet-like.' The controls were also easy to use. (I still can't figure out AC). My only complaint is the long loading time - almost 10 minutes on my computer) but the wait is defintely worth it. I'm already getting excited about Witcher 2.

5 out of 5 stars PROBABLY THE BEST RPG YET   November 20, 2008

I bought this game about a year ago and have long since completed it. I attempted to Download and install the enhanced version, but it was a no go. It is apparant that I'm not alone in this either as a lot of others have been unsucessful in downloading it. Initially, I was more than a little ticked off as after I had installed it, it kept crashing and was an exercise in frustration. I had pretty much written the game off, as I had just installed a new Nvidia 8400 GS Video card. After looking at the specs on the card, I realized that I had made a bad choice. I then purchased am Nvidia 8600GT card and problem solved and I was hooked. The decisions you make during the game will determine the direction of the game. You will ultimately reach the same end, but as the saying goes, getting there is half the fun, and this is certainly no exception. The enhanced version supposedly adds two new adventures as well as all the other aforementioned goodies. My advice would be to skip the frustration and agravation of the download and just buy it as I intend to do. I don't know why it was censored, as all indications were that what was censored in The Witcher (Nudity), was present in God Of War and other games. So much for consistancy. This game has a strong storyline and a lot of interactivity. plus the graphics are great. You do need to pay attention to your computer specs. You should be able to run it with a 1.5 Ghz processor,Preferably 2.0 Ghz. also, if you are running Vista, you should have at least 2 gb of ram and preferably 3 or 4. As far as graphics go, do not even consider running it with an onboard graphics chipset, it isn't going to work. You need a good PCIe graphics card with a bit transfer rate 128. Also, with a PCIe card, be sure you have, at least, a 450w and preferably 500w PSU. Although it does't require something along the lines of a DELL XPS 721 H2C to play it, it does take more than an "entry level" computer. I played it on an eMachines T5212 that I had made a few changes to. It had a Pentium D 925 ( 3.0 Ghz) processor ( I have since changed it to a PD 945 (3.4 Ghz) ), 2 Gb ram, Nvidia 8600GT PCIe graphics card, and a 500w PSU to power the thing. Most systems "out of the box" can be upgraded to some extent and it is always worth it to max it out over time or as the budget will allow. This will take some research to determine the biggest processor and max memory that can be run on the motherboard, but is worth it in the end. In my opinion, this is ultimate RPG and new standards have been set with this game. Charlie S.

5 out of 5 stars Simple- stylish and a must-have for PC gamers   November 18, 2008

This is the best game of the year (2007-2008). See the other entries for specific game play details, but there is no other game that I have played for over 6 months than the Witcher. I'm on my 8th re-play and the story has been different every time. CDPROJECTRED has made many improvements to an already wonderful game. The only problem I found with the game was an unusual loss of time awareness, and that my job interferes with my game playing experience. The producers of the game really care about us, the players. Their forum support is not like anything I have ever seen for any product. They are That good.
Caution: you need to read the computer specs carefully and really understand what your components are and what they can do. It is not the game's fault if you don't comply with the published specs. :(
This is an awesome game, but it draws heavily on the GPU. most integrated GPU's will not run the game. Low-end computers need not even try.
