Average Game nothing new but not horrible, meh! November 23, 2008 AeroEngineer (Los Angeles, CA) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
This game doesn't really do much to stick out, its graphics are standard second tier, like Fall of Liberty, but not as bad as the other reviewer claims; HL2's graphics are still better than 90% of current games so there's no comparison there but I'm positive they are better than HL1's with some genuinely cool looking creatures such as a giant made out of different objects like cars, fire hydrants and other things in a busy NY street. Story: Well this is somewhat muddled centering around the mythical Pandora's Box opened in the modern world and the consequences that ensue. You can read the summary of it elsewhere but I didn't find it all that engaging or interesting, usual get framed stuff and try to get out of it. There seem to be mythical bad guys scattered in this game like gryphons and others that seem just thrown in. Of course you have your buddy on the radio keeping you updated with story info and other things. You also have standard PDA that you can get info and objectives from as well as picking up dropped data scattered in the levels, I haven't really used it though. Gameplay: This is a no surprises type of shooter with the occasional environmental puzzle mixed in to get to your next objective think HL2 but not as sophisticated. This seems to have a sort of Bioshock-esque infected hand weapon that you get from grabbing PB in the first scene and you use this to fight the mythical bad guys as well as the human bad guys. I've played the first level and you use it and recharge it by killing the baddies and getting their energy or something like that, the discharge from your hand doesn't go very far but it is used to stun the baddies and then you finish them off with your other weapon, either a melee axe or a firearm, you can also carry molotovs/grenades. I'm not sure if there is an upgrade system to this like in Bioshock. The guns are pretty standard fair in both sound and look. You can find where you are supposed to go next by pressing the Q button and it will popup. You seem to be an expert at using a bypass to get past electronically locked doors of all kinds simply by using the E button to pop open the keypad and reroute power and it seems most doors are like this. Also you use E to turn valves and do other general actions, again pretty standard. Nothing hugely wrong though. Graphics: Like I said these are generally second tier level with the some things being better than average. I didn't find the environments anything that special, the humans are not very good even in the cutscenes and the bad guys are nothing special either. Most of the textures are bland and not well detailed, but they are not horrible either. I wouldn't say the pics shown here are really that representative of the actual in game play, but almost none in a sales brochure are for any game. The water is not the type of advanced level you see in a Crysis or the latest Tomb Raider and neither is the fire. I don't think there is any atmospheric fog or any of that type of thing in this game. Again it's pretty unamazing stuff that could be said to be a step up from Far Cry 1's or Fall of Liberty but it's hard to compare a game that's colors are dark to a game that has bright colors like FC's. Some of it seems like an afterthought such as the museum statues are pretty bland and not detailed much and the cars are about the same way as well as the usual bland drums and boxes scattered about. Sound: This was also par for the course, not really that immersive but the rock music let's you know that this is mostly a run and gun action game and is fast paced most of the time. I didn't find the music too much to handle though and it's not always blaring just when you are in an action heavy sequence like COD4's rock music gave you that urgent feeling. The weapons are all pretty generic sounding to me. Value: Again I've only played through the first level that takes place in the museum, the streets, and the subway so I can't say how long this is. This game like many others seems like they just wanted to put something out there knowing that it was nothing special but it was cheap to produce so they didn't need to do too much to turn a profit. This game is already lost in the jungle of many games coming out and probably will stay there. Based on the unremarkableness of this game it's of course not worth it, it's worth twenty-five to thirty dollars brand new or around there. For the full fifty bucks or less you can get an exceptional game like Deadspace, COD, Gears of War, Brothers in arms, Crysis, Tomb Raider Underworld, HL2 and others. If you want a standard FPS with nothing really innovative but a decent if uninspiring play through this would probably work. Again this shouldn't be considered at anything above thirty bucks brand new but you could probably wait a month and get it for even less than that. There don't seem to be any major flaws in the game and it does entertain but it's not a top tier game in any sense, I can't see playing this through more than once and there are so many excellent games both new and not new that you could pass this by and not miss much.
Garbage November 19, 2008 C Gamer 3 out of 7 found this review helpful
This game is total rubbish. The graphics reminded me of Half-Life with bloom (and Half-Life is still a better game than this). All the pixels of blood and characters are made of blocks even when i set it to Very High. The sound is sometimes over done with too much rock music. You can clearly see that they're TRIED to amp up the scripted sequences with the music but it fails miserably. And my god talk about scripted sequences. Oh and did i mention that characters walk through you at times? Please avoid this title there are so many more things i can say to bash this game. Plz save your 50US and move on i beg you. Total and utter garbage..
