Frustrating Problems Saving January 3, 2009 KatsMom (Chicago, IL) This game is hokier than the classic version. The dialouge between the ACME agents is somewhat painful, albeit usually educational. For those who are looking to walk down memory lane, you may be disappointed. Unlike the old games where you would hunt down minions, & work your way up the ranks to hunting Carmen herself, this is 1 overarching case made up of several mini missions. I actually like that take on the game. The interface is completely different now as well. Rather than questioning witnesses and getting clues of the next step, the game mostly requires the agents to click on hotspots and retrieve scraps of notes that are, well, rather blunt. Gone are the days of a slow-build to revealing the solution with a broad clue that applies to a region and more specific clues that eventually narrow down the location you need. Each mini-mission takes approximately 30 minutes and there is apparently no way to save the game until the mission has been completed. For that matter, even after certain missions have been completed, the game will not save. It could not be more frustrating to keep replaying the same missions over and over. In sum, this game appears to be dumbed down quite a bit from many of the other mystery/problem solving games out there. The key clues needed to solve many of the puzzles are automatically put front and center after the puzzle has been selected so it takes little thought to solve them. It's also impossible to lose Carmen's trail. All the player has to do is contact the chief and she just point blank tells you "Go here. Do this." I think the game would be more challenging (and educational) if the Chief would give hints, perhaps for security purposes. Maybe for younger players, that direct approach is necessary, but I find it hard to believe that 12 year-olds need to be so directly walked through the story. Finally, please note that this game was copyrighted in 2001, so on a visit to New York City, you will see the Twin Towers, not only standing, but as a point of discussion.
We never got our order. We are disappointed. December 21, 2008 Kathleen Harris We ordered this game (Where In The World Is Carmen Sandiego?) on 19 November; however it is the 21st of December and we have yet to receive our package. The gift was for a little boy from Santa Claus & now we are looking for something else. We have been in contact with Nothing But Software who provides the games for Amazon; have been told it was "being shipped" and that they would send a second game since the first one never reached our destination; but we still have yet to receive either. Our shipping address is in Dulles, VA; however we currently reside over in Europe. We understand that it takes a few more days to reach our home, but we have never waited this long for an order from Amazon. We have asked for a tracking # to see if it has reached Dulles International Airport in order to ship it the rest of the way to us; however NO ONE can provide any other information than "it will be delivered anytime between 16 December & 6 January". When we go online to Amazon.com to see how it was shipped (i.e. UPS, USPS, FEDEX, etc.) there is no information other than "ground shipping". Overall we are disappointed with the service. We do know that Christmas is a busy time of the year, but no communication makes us question our decision to order a game from Amazon.com in the future.
1996 Version one of the Best April 12, 2008 Elena Smith (Marysville, WA) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
My niece and son, ages 9 and 6, have played various versions of this very game but this was the one they both liked the most. They didn't care for the other versions because it had an annoying robot as the "CHIEF" whereas in this version, it is the "CHIEF" from the PBS tv version of "Where in The World is Carmen Sandiego?" Plus, you didn't need an almanac to play this version as it has a huge data base built right into the software where the kids can key in a word from the clues given to determine what country to fly to next. Great fun for learning about World Geography and interesting facts about our world. Make sure the ART WORK on the CASE has the same photo as Listed otherwise you will not get the correct version.
