1 out of 5 stars Resource hog that makes a modern computer feel like it's from the 80s   April 2, 2008

There is something totally wrong with eTrust Antivirus. I have never used an antivirus program that completely cripples every machine it runs on. Antivirus apps by other companies are relatively transparent---they run a full scan once a day, and then scan any files that are downloaded or received via emails. eTrust does this as well, but it has no concept of how to run in the background. The scanning service wreaks havoc with day to day operations.

For example, I have a fast and modern business laptop (Core 2 Duo 2ghz, 2GB of RAM, 120gb 7200 RPM hard drive). With eTrust disabled, it can open Outlook in about 1-2 seconds, and it can open a word document in 3 seconds tops. While eTrust is running, it might take 20-30 seconds for Outlook to come up. Word, and other MS Office products, tend to hang for 1-2 minutes. Excel is the worst offender, for some reason. When you click on a cell in Excel, it can totally lock up for minutes. When you open up Task Manager to see what could possibly be causing this delay, you'll find InoRT.exe (the eTrust realtime virus engine) eating up 100% of your processor time.

Unfortunately, eTrust was chosen by my employer as the antivirus program of choice, because it's cheap. As a result, I have seen this antivirus app slow down file servers, interfere with VMWare servers(which are very file-IO dependent), and make old hardware practically unusable. I actually had to created a batch file to disable the service temporarily. I have never rated a product on Amazon this low, and I hope I never have to again.. If there was a zero star option, I would have chosen it. No antivirus app should be this intrusive.

Do not use this product. It is very hard to remove from your computer. It is harder to install than Norton, and is an inferior product. I will never buy their product again.

This software is "One Time Use"! If you have a notebook and laptop, you won't be able to install for both!

It sucks!

Yes, it's easy to install, configure and use. The footprint is small and it doesn't hog resources. That's the good news. The bad news is that this software's virus detection rate is abysmal and the company's tech support is worse. So, in short, don't *trust* it.

Two examples, starting with tech support. After building a new computer, I had several blue screens (stop errors, BSODs) and my analysis seemed to indicate that EZ Antivirus was at least partially responsible. I emailed support with all the relevant info. Their (paraphrased) reply: "We understand that you are having Faults in Windows. This is because you have Windows installed. If you did not have Windows you would not have Faults. Thank you for contacting E-Trust." I should have that engraved on a plaque.

Example 2, AV detection: When my subscription ran out, I uninstalled EZ and tried a demo of Kaspersky. It found 5 viruses on my computer that EZ never told me about. In this case, it's 2 strikes and you're out. Goodby, Computer Associates.
